Shiv Sena was founded in Maharashtra in 1966 by Bal Thackeray as a regional political movement focused initially on the interests of Marathi-speaking people. Over time, it expanded its political agenda and became a significant participant in Maharashtra and national politics. The original party split in 2022, resulting in separate factions, while the Shiv Sena name became associated with the faction led by Eknath Shinde. Its political agenda has included regional identity, cultural issues, infrastructure, public services, and development.
