The All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), also known as the Trinamool Congress or TMC, is an Indian political party founded by Mamata Banerjee on 1 January 1998 after she separated from the Indian National Congress. The party emerged as a political platform focused on challenging the long-standing Left Front government in West Bengal and representing the concerns of ordinary citizens. It became a major political force in the state and formed the West Bengal government in 2011, ending 34 years of Left Front rule. AITC's political agenda has included rural development, social welfare, support for farmers, women's empowerment, education, healthcare, and the protection of Bengali language and cultural identity. Although its strongest base is in West Bengal, the party has also contested elections and built political organisations in other parts of India.
AITC's constitution identifies socialism, secularism, and democracy as its core principles. The party emphasises social equality, poverty reduction, constitutional governance, and the upliftment of disadvantaged communities through democratic participation. Its political platform also highlights Bengali identity, regional interests, welfare programmes, and access to public services. Political analysts commonly associate AITC with regionalism, Bengali nationalism, welfarism, and populist politics, while its stated principles stress secularism, social justice, and inclusive development.
