The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) is an Indian regional political party founded by M. G. Ramachandran, popularly known as MGR, on 17 October 1972. It emerged after MGR separated from the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and went on to become a major political force in Tamil Nadu. The party first formed the state government in 1977 under MGR's leadership and subsequently played a significant role in Tamil Nadu's politics under leaders including J. Jayalalithaa. AIADMK has traditionally focused on public welfare, social assistance, economic development, and the interests of Tamil-speaking people. Its governments have been associated with welfare programmes addressing food security, education, healthcare, and support for disadvantaged sections of society.
AIADMK is associated with Dravidian politics and the political ideas of C. N. Annadurai, whose name appears in the party's title. Its political approach has emphasised social justice, secularism, welfare-oriented governance, and the protection of Tamil language, culture, and regional interests. The party has supported public assistance programmes and measures aimed at improving living standards among economically disadvantaged communities. Political analysts commonly describe AIADMK in terms of Dravidianism, regionalism, and welfare-oriented populism, although its practical policy positions have also reflected changing political and electoral circumstances.
