NPP • National People's Party

About

The National People's Party (NPP) is an Indian political party founded by P. A. Sangma in January 2013. Headquartered in Shillong, Meghalaya, the party has its strongest political presence in Northeast India, particularly in Meghalaya, and seeks to represent the region's diverse communities and interests in national politics. Its agenda includes the development of northeastern states, improved infrastructure, protection of indigenous communities, and greater political representation for people whose concerns are closely tied to the region's cultural and social diversity. In June 2019, the Election Commission of India recognised the NPP as a national party, making it the first political party originating from Northeast India to receive this status.

Ideology

The NPP's constitution identifies socialism, secularism, and parliamentary democracy as its guiding principles. The party emphasises social, economic, and political justice; equality of opportunity; and the protection of constitutional rights, including those of Scheduled Tribes, Scheduled Castes, and Other Backward Classes. It also stresses the preservation of indigenous traditions, cultural diversity, and the interests of northeastern communities alongside national unity. Its political approach combines regionalism and indigenous-community representation with participation in India's national democratic system.
